Dive In Hermosa - Build The Pool We Need

Why Hermosa Beach Needs a Pool

The South Bay's aquatics capacity is stretched to the breaking point. In the three beach cities that define our coastline—Manhattan Beach, Hermosa Beach, and Redondo Beach—there is just one public pool: Begg Pool. It is a 25-yard pool with six lanes, tasked with serving a combined population of roughly 135,000 people. That reality alone makes clear why families, teams, and programs struggle to find space.

For Hermosa Beach residents, access is even more limited. Manhattan Beach residents are understandably given priority, which means Begg Pool is rarely a viable option for Hermosa families seeking lessons, training time, or consistent programming. In a world-renowned surf and aquatic community, Hermosa Beach has no public pool of its own—and no reliable place for children to learn to swim, for teens to train, or for seniors to safely exercise year-round.

Hermosa means beautiful. Beautiful beaches. Beautiful waves. A beautiful life shaped by water. Yet our city's recreational infrastructure does not reflect that identity. While Hermosa Beach offers many excellent "nice-to-have" amenities—basketball and tennis courts, baseball fields, pickleball, even lawn bowling—those facilities serve specific segments of the population. A swimming pool is different. A pool is essential. It is one of the only recreational facilities that serves everyone: toddlers and teens, adults and seniors, adaptive users and competitive athletes alike.

A modern, purpose-built aquatics center would meet a critical regional need while finally giving Hermosa Beach a facility that matches who we are. It would provide safe, local, year-round access to swim instruction, fitness, rehabilitation, and community connection.

This is not a luxury—it's overdue. Hermosa Beach has the opportunity to invest in something foundational, inclusive, and lasting. Now is the moment to build the aquatics center our community—and the next generation—deserves.

Finding the Right Location

A community pool has been the #1 priority in Hermosa Beach's Parks Master Plan for years.

Parks and Recreation needs to explore pool locations—whether within Hermosa Beach city limits or partnered with a neighboring city—so that Hermosa residents have access to a community pool.

Multiple possible locations in and around Hermosa Beach are being explored. The goal is to find a site that best serves our community's needs while building broad support across all neighborhoods.

Location studies are ongoing
